DIY Unicorn Mason Jar!

DIY Unicorn Mason Jar!

Unicorn love!  I have to say I’m slightly obsessed with unicorns that’s why I couldn’t resist this DIY Unicorn Mason Jar.  It’s just so adorable.

I’m sure you’ve noticed that there are unicorns just about everywhere anymore.  Right?!?

I couldn’t find one that really fit into my home decor though, so I decided to make my own.  This one specifically is going to end up holding my paint brushes for my DIY/craft projects.  Which is perfect as they are rainbow colors.  Some day I’ll have my magical craft room to place it in.( A girl can dream!) LOL!

DIY Unicorn Mason Jar!

Supplies needed:

mason jar or any plain jar(I picked up one from Hobby Lobby- love that simplicity of it- nice and smooth)

acrylic paint white, black and gold

high gloss modge podge

fake flowers(enough to go around the rim of the the mason jar lid)

1 piece of card stock or any piece of thicker paper

gold glitter

hot glue gun and glue sticks

foam sponge brush

small paint brush

2 paper plates

scissors

To start with you will need the mason jar or jar of your choosing.  Here’s the one I loved from Hobby Lobby.  It has a super smooth/ flat surface which is perfect for painting on.

Next I took off the lid and placed the empty jar on a paper plate.  I then took white acrylic paint and placed that on my additional paper plate for my paints.

Using the foam sponge brush I added a coat of white acrylic paint to the outside of the jar.  I skipped the rim where the lid screws on and the very bottom of the jar as these areas are not visible.   Then allow to dry.  I waited about 20 minutes and applied a second coat of white acrylic paint.  Then allowed that to dry for about 20 minutes.  Next, I added a coat of high gloss modge podge over the white and allowed that to dry the same.

Once all layers are dry including the modge podge it’s time to paint on your unicorns eyelashes.  Practice painting them on the plate first to get comfortable with the brush width etc.  Try to space them evenly and where you think the eyelashes should be.  They were a little tricky, so I will be making you guys a template here soon so you can trace them on and then paint them in.(work in progress- coming soon)

While the first coat of white acrylic paint was drying I took the piece of card stock and painted a gold square about 6 inches by 6 inches and a white strip about 2 inches by 2 inches.  I allowed them to dry as well for about 20 minutes.  These will become your unicorn horn and ears.

Once the gold square was dry I added a layer of high gloss modge podge and coated the wet modge podge with gold glitter.  I then allowed it to dry.  I cut out 2 identical(by folding the strip in half and cutting both at the same time) triangle ears from the dry white 2x2 strip and set them aside.

Now ,it was time to begin the flower rim for the top of the jar.  I simple cut off flowers from a stem of fake flowers.  I choose to use multiple flowers(types and colors, but it’s up to you)

You will begin to glue(using a hot glue gun) the flowers on the outer rim of the jar lid.  See below.

Keep them close enough when gluing that you do not see the jar lid on the side.(see below)

Continue until the entire outer side of the jar lid is covered in a complete circle.

By now your glitter 6x6 square should be about dry.  Add an additional coat of just high gloss modge podge.  This will seal the glitter so it’s not falling off everywhere later.  Allow to dry for about an hour or more as you have quite a few layers on the paper and you want this to be nice and stiff when you make your unicorn horn out of it.

Once dry cut the glitter square out of the paper and trim it to desired size for your horn.  I believe mine ended up about 4 inches by 4 inches but it’s your preference depending on how prominent you would like your unicorn horn to be.

To create the horn simply roll the glitter square into a cone shape and using your hot glue gun glue into shape.  NOTE:  this will not work if your gold glitter paper is not completely dry.

Once your unicorn horn has been turned into a cone fold the bottom edge out slightly to give yourself a place to be able to hot glue the horn to the flower coated mason jar lid.  The ears will be folding the same edge on the bottom as well to allow them to be glued on too.  See below.

NOTE:

Before gluing them in place on the mason jar lid, put the lid on the jar correctly and then mark where the ears and horn need to be glued.  If you skip this step you will end up with your horn and ears not aligning correctly with your unicorns eyes.

Your almost done!  Now, do you want the top open on closed.  I choose open as I want to store paint brushes in mine but either way is perfect.

Here’s the finished project!

I love it open with my DIY/craft paint brushes inside.  It makes every project seem just a tad bit more magical.

Here’s with the lid closed.

Quick Solution to Stop Losing Your Keys!

Quick Solution to Stop Losing Your Keys!

You know that feeling?  Your ready to walk out the door, hands are full, but there are no car keys anywhere to be found?  I am far to familiar with that with that option.  With our busy lives as a family of six, we have to stay as organized as possible.  This key storage is a must for our sanity.

We have quite a few vehicles and have to swap them out frequently related to task and who all is in the car.  Plus our families often help with our children’s extra activities and drive our vehicles as well.

That being said ……..Yes, we have a lot of keys lol!

I was over the never ending key hunt and determined to find a solution.  Time was wasted as I looked through the typical key storage options, but there was a lack of hooks and space for our large amount of keys.   I couldn’t just order one that I knew wouldn’t really work.   That’s why I had been on the look out for the perfect key hook storage solution!

Good news, I found it!

See, when out and about earlier this week, I picked up this great little hook set at Marshall’s along with these three separate large decor keys.

It always seems to be that I find whatever it is when I’m not specifically looking for it.  I was there for something else entirely(yoga pants) and poof there was my key solution.  Yoga pants, key hooks same thing right ?!?  LOL

The price was perfect too!

$2.99 per key x 3= $8.97

$5.99 for adorable farmhouse hooks already mounted on a white washed board

Total cost = $14.96 + tax

I’m in love with the way it turned out!  Simple and chic.  Perfect key storage solution.  What do you think?

XOXO
